NAIDOC Week Basketball Carnival Run by The ABC Foundation Scores Big in Carnarvon
Made possible by the generous sponsorship of Healthway.
The town of Carnarvon buzzed with excitement during 2024 NAIDOC Week as the eagerly anticipated Youth Basketball Tournament, run by The ABC Foundation and hosted by former Perth Wildcats Captain Brad Robbins and Vice-Captain Greg Hire, took center court.
Both Robbins and Hire played pivotal roles in coordinating and hosting the Youth Basketball Tournament this year. Their presence and expertise were instrumental in making the day an unforgettable experience for all involved, including those cheering on the sidelines.
This year’s Basketball Tournament has reinforced the power of sports and culture to bring communities together. This safe environment aimed to reduce anti-social behavior and support disengaged youth, by promoting healthy lifestyles that will inspire the next generation of leaders within the Carnarvon Community.
Karen Stead, Head of Community Projects and Partnerships said, “It’s incredible to see the impact sports can have on young lives. This event is all about empowering kids and encouraging healthy choices within these communities and beyond.”
The success of this year’s event was made possible by the generous sponsorship of Healthway, which aimed to bring the community together through sport, culture, and healthy living. Additionally, the invaluable support from one of ABC Foundation’s On-Country Partners, Gascoyne Community Services Aboriginal Corporation, played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth running of the event. Their involvement highlighted the importance of community collaboration in creating positive experiences for young people.
Sahneemah Moncrieff, Chair of Gascoyne Community Services (On Country Partner) expressed her enthusiasm for future events. “Seeing the kids within the community so engaged and having fun is what it’s all about,” she said. “We’re already looking forward to the next tournament and continuing to inspire and empower young people through sports.”
With the resounding success of this year’s Basketball Tournament, the kids are already asking when the next one will be.
The event has set a new standard for community engagement and youth empowerment in Carnarvon, generating excitement for future events run by The ABC Foundation.
